Hillard Graham Batt of Charlottetown died peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on September 17, 2022 after a brief illness. He was 98 years old.
Graham was born in Charlottetown on April 11, 1924, the only child of George Edwin Batt and Iva May (MacKenzie) Batt.
He excelled academically, winning various prizes and scholarships along the way. He attended West Kent School and Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, and Dalhousie University in Halifax NS (B.A. 1946, LL.B 1947). He then studied at The London School of Economics in London England on an IODE scholarship where he earned a Master of Laws degree in 1950.
When Graham returned to Canada, he taught Law at Dalhousie University for a short time. In 1950 he began working in the Law Department of Imperial Oil Ltd. in Calgary AB.
Also in 1950, Graham married Ruth Dicks Macmillan of Charlottetown at The Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary. Their children, Margot and Jim, were born in Calgary.
In 1957, Graham was transferred to Imperial Oil’s Head Office in Toronto ON, where he worked at the newly constructed building at 111 St. Clair Avenue West. In 1972 Graham was made a Queen’s Counsel. He retired in 1985 from the position of Associate General Counsel, Imperial Oil Ltd.
Graham enjoyed music all his life. He also loved books and was an avid reader. He was quiet and reserved, always kind and generous-hearted towards his family.
In 1998 he and Ruth moved back to Charlottetown from Toronto. In 2017 they moved to The Mount Continuing Care Community, where Ruth died in November 2017. We appreciate all The Mount has done for Graham and Ruth.
Graham is survived by his daughter Margot Ruth Ball (Rick) of Charlottetown, his son James Graham Batt of Charlottetown, and his granddaughter Rebecca Mary Quintana (Chris) of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
