The death occurred peacefully at Beach Grove Home on Sunday, September 13, 2026, of Roy James Ridlington of Charlottetown, age 82 years. Loving husband of Susan (nee Farquharson) and father of Dr. Tracy Lynn (Dr. Dan) Steinitz, Stephanie Leigh Ridlington, Rosalyn Claire (Craig) Abbott, and Rebecca Jane Ridlington. Proud Granddad of Dhalia and Andreas Steinitz; James, Susannah, and Ellen Abbott. Survived by brother Steve (Susan) Ridlington, siblings-in-law Carol Anne Donnelly, Mary Jane (Dale) Zinck, Diane Farquharson, Robert (Dianne), Ruth Welton, and John (Donna) Farquharson, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Rudolph and Winnifred Kathleen Ridlington, parents-in-law Clare and Robert Farquharson, and brothers-in-law Terry Donnelly, Jim Farquharson, and Larry Welton.

 

Roy James Ridlington was born on 16 May, 1944 in St. John’s Woking in Surrey, England. He was the first-born son of Albert Rudolph (Rudy) Ridlington (Quebec, PQ) and Winnifred Kathleen Brammer (Macclesfield, Cheshire).

 

Proud son of a British war bride, he arrived in Canada in 1946 and subsequently lived in Markham, Ontario, Valcartier and Quebec City, Quebec.

 

He was an active young man in the Boy Scouts where was recognized with their highest award – the designation of Queen’s Scout. He also advanced highly in army cadets.

 

He graduated from Quebec High School in 1961 and attended military college in St. Jean, Quebec before taking up his active army career in Gagetown, NB.

 

With support from the Armed Forces, he completed a Bachelor of Arts at Mount Allison University in 1972 and through the Judge Advocate General, a Bachelor of Laws from University if New Brunswick in 1977. He was admitted to the New Brunswick Law Society.

 

After being admitted to the Bar, Roy was posted as Deputy Judge Advocate at Gagetown. During this posting, he went around to Chatham, Moncton and Summerside to provide legal advice. He met his wife Susan, a native of PEI, on one of those visits. Roy was then posted to Halifax where he remained until 1983. In 1983, Roy accepted a position with Veterans' Affairs in Charlottetown. He was with Veterans Affairs for 26 years and worked with the Bureau of Pension Advocates and the Veterans Review and Appeal Board. He was a member of the PEI Law Society.

 

He was active in the community with the Hillsborough and Summerside Rotary Clubs and the New Haven Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

 

He was a proud family man and devout Christian.

Callum is and always will be the love of my life. I met him indirectly when I was 13 at my aunt’s cottage. He was skinny dipping with his friends in Nine Mile Creek at the cottage. In later years we reconnected. He was born in Montreal, PQ and with his mom Hilda Gail Cummings Robenson, they sailed to Liverpool, UK to connect with George Joslin. His sister Linda was born in the Red Hills Hospital near London. He moved back to Canada at age 17 (I think).

 

He lived in Ottawa at various times and got to know his Uncle Parker Cumming and Aunt Alice and his cousins, Wayne and Dean. He met his very best friend for life in Ottawa. His name is Bill Bowser and his wife Sue, a 65-year friendship. From there he became a guitar player and loved to play at the various high schools, and halls in Ottawa. He worked at Canadian Linen and drove taxi for Blueline Taxi. Summers were often spent in PEI. He moved permanently to PEI in 1973, where he met his first wife Patricia Strickland. They had Michael and Natasha Joslin. He helped to raise her children, Duane and Denise Arnold. He drove tractor trailers and started his own company, Island 'Fence".

 

He met Barbara Crosby on May 13, 1983, and they married July 18, 1987. He helped to raise her children, Christopher and Shannon. Pursey. They became the greatest love story. They travelled in Canada, Florida, did cruises from the USA to the Caribbean and Europe - too much fun. He truly loved the cruises. He loved to pretend he was the captain. We drove all over Canada and the USA with our camper with aging animals. I arranged a surprise trip in June of 2026 for his 80th birthday on the Via Canadian train. We caught the train in Toronto to Vancouver in the middle of the soccer craziest time. He was in 7th heaven. He sat up in the dome car every day just to watch the trees. His health was declining quickly, and his daughter had his DNA done with surprising results. He had a big surprise to find out who he had been told who his father was/wasn’t, and he was ecstatic to find out he had six new family members.

 

On September 10th, we lost him. He was and always will be the greatest man I ever have known.

Norman and Hind came to PEI on Christmas Day, 1973 and purchased the Brighton Clover Farm in January, 1974. He was a pillar of the community, serving each individual with kindness and warmth. Norman was the chanter at his beloved church, where he offered his voice and his whole being to God and his faith community.

 

He adored his grandchildren and was incredibly proud of each of them. A fact he shared in each conversation.
