Sylvia Elizabeth Johnson Riley (nee Todd) died peacefully on November 9, 2024. Born in Gananoque, Ontario, Sylvia was the loving wife of James C Johnson, until his passing in 2002 and later Douglas Riley, until his passing in 2022. Mother of F. Grant Johnson (Alida Love), Keith Johnson (Sandra Moorman), and Caroline Johannes (Jay). Grandmother of Indra, Mira, Krista, Jack, Charles, James, Emma, and Nathaniel. Also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Sylvia was the youngest of 4 children. Her early years were spent on the family dairy farm before they moved to Gananoque. She grew up on the St. Lawrence River which fostered an intense love of the water and all associated activities.
Sylvia attended Queen's University studying math. She then headed for adventure in Toronto where she worked as a bookkeeper and met James Johnson. James and Sylvia married and had their 3 children in Ontario before moving to Prince Edward Island in the early 1970s.
Always a champion of education, Sylvia served as a long time Trustee and then President of the Prince Edward Island School Board. She was also a Member of the PEI Land Use Commission and was active with the PEI Status of Women. Sylvia was thrilled to return to school at the University of PEI as a mature student to receive her Associates of Business degree in her 60’s. She was a loyal member of Trinity United Church in Summerside and later in Charlottetown, singing in both church choirs.
Sylvia loved gardening, animals (especially cats), books, politics, and discussions with many friends. She was also a lifelong sailor enjoying summers on Windsong in Ontario, followed by Nauti Rowdy while in PEI with her young family, and finally on Silooette with Doug Riley in Mahone Bay, NS.
Sweet Sylvia was a wonderful mother to Grant, Keith and Caroline and a devoted grandmother to her 8 grandchildren.
The Johnson family offers special thanks to the care team of Andrews Park West for their constant care of and compassion for Sylvia during her time with them.
Celebration of life and interment to be determined.
