With great sadness, we share the passing of our Dad, John L Read Senior (July 13, 1937 - October 19, 2023) of Dunedin, formerly of Borden, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, after a short illness.
Born in 1937 to Jack and Hazel Read, John grew up on the family farm in Borden, with his late brother George and sister Elizabeth (the late Gordon) Lehman. He attended Prince of Wales College studying engineering, boarding in Charlottetown. While living in Charlottetown, John worked as an usher at the local hockey rink. After his studies, John returned to Borden, farming alongside his father.
In 1959 John married his loving wife of 55 years, the late Anne (Jenkins), with whom he raised four children, John Jr., Karen (Rick) Cameron, Shelley (John Aten) and Joseph (Karrissa MacKenzie). John was a proud grandfather to Christopher, Adam (Cassie), Matthew, Chelsea (Evan) and Lisa (Curtis), and great grandfather to Calvin and Caleb.
John was extremely industrious and while running the farm he worked with CN Marine for close to thirty years. Reflecting on those years, we wonder how he did it. He would get up at 5:00 to tend to the cattle, head off to work in the engine room of one of the boats, come home to change, head to the barn, and come back for supper. Oftentimes, he would return to the barns to ensure the cows were bedded. During his farming career, they raised foxes, poultry, pigs, dairy cattle, before switching to beef cattle. Many people ferrying across the strait enjoyed seeing the farm's black angus cattle grazing in the fields about the red cliffs.
While raising a young family, working and farming, John found time to volunteer within the community in several capacities. He coached several hockey teams, helped with the rink, and acted as school trustee.
After a farming injury, John and Anne retired to Dunedin, where they built their forever home and operated a successful bed and breakfast for a decade. John, a jack of all trades, was able to fix any mechanical, plumbing, or electrical issue. He built rooms, sheds, gazebos, and several furniture pieces. Our family home featured a wrought iron bannister and post designed and forged by John He turned pieces of exotic woods into bowls and other intriguing pieces. John was a passionate photographer, often gifting his beautiful prints to people who shared special connections with him. In his 70's John took up carving, producing exquisite gold-leaf frames for his Aunt's oil paintings. One such painting is displayed in the main hallway at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Survived by his cousins, who were like brothers, George (Jan) Barton and John (Florence) Cameron, siblings-in-law, Garth (Betty) Jenkins, June (the late Ralph) Cooke, Ethyl Jones, and Ben (Gayle) Jenkins. Predeceased by siblings-in-law, Eileen (Shelton) Harris, Beth (Lorne) Elias and Jim (Flora) Jenkins, with whom he was especially close.
The incredible staff of QEH Units 1 and 8 not only attended to Dad's medical needs, they took time to listen to his stories, for which the family are grateful. We would also like to thank the staff at Sams Cornwall, and Sobeys West Royalty for the kindness given to Dad. Dad was blessed to be loved and cared for by many people, among them the family extends special thanks to Kevin and Lisa Ross, Bruce and Marie Brine, Dean and Sally Paynter, David and Cheryl Dawson, Ann (the late Willard) Leard, and our Aunt Flora Jenkins. For the many others who loved and enjoyed Dad's company, we are forever thankful.
In keeping with Dad's wishes, there will be an informal gathering to celebrate his life, share memories and offer peace and comfort. If so desired, donations may be made to a charity of one's choosing. Dad's wish was to work toward a better tomorrow and for people to be kind, enjoying life for what it has to offer.
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel from where a Celebration of Life will be held in the Morrie Room on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. A private interment to follow. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
