Janette “Jan” Bird passed away on Monday, August 21, 2023 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, with her husband of 55 years, Gordon at her side. Jan is survived by husband Gordon, her four daughters, Rosalyn Bird (Mike), Prince George, B.C., Katherine Bird, San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala, Andrea Bird (Robert) Grand Tracadie, PEI and Michelle Bird (Alastair) New Plymouth, New Zealand and four grandchildren, Roan Saengmeng, Eli and Cassidy Hancock and Alejandro Bird. Jan has requested cremation and no public funeral services. Friends are invited to drop in to Apt 210, 97 Queen St, Charlottetown, for a celebration of life between 2:00 and 5:00 PM on Friday afternoon, August 25
Jan was born in Glasgow, Scotland and finished high school there in 1962. After high school, she worked in computer programming at the University of Glasgow until 1965. With only a few hundred dollars in her pocket, she migrated to Toronto where she continued her career in computer programming at the Toronto Stock Exchange and for consulting companies. It was in Toronto where she met Gordon, then a graduate student at the University of Toronto. In 1968 they married and soon after in 1971, moved to New Zealand with their two oldest daughters. In 1977, by then a mother of four daughters, the family returned to Pinawa, Manitoba. In 1983, the family moved to Edmonton Alberta. When the girls were young Jan was a dedicated mother and volunteer; once her daughters were all in school she returned to her computing career and worked for a number of consulting companies in Canada and on one project in Australia. In 2000 she and Gordon semi-retired to Cumberland, PEI where they operated the Bird’s Eye View Bed and Breakfast until 2014. In 2016 they sold their PEI home and moved into Charlottetown.
Jan was a great lover of flowers, both in the garden and her home. If anyone wishes to send a condolence, a floral gift to a seniors home or a donation to a charity of your choice would be appropriate.
Arrangements entrusted to MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com

Oscar’s journey with cancer began 18 months ago and ended at home on Saturday evening, July 29, 2023. He was able to be in his own room and surrounded with love by our family. Adored son of Trevor and Catherine (Hill) Waugh and loving brother of Grace and Harry. Fondly remembered by his grandmother Carol Hill, aunts and uncles Teena (Andy), Gerald Paul (Shirlee Anne), George (Kassandra) and Amanda Hill (Paul), David (Kathryn) Waugh, Carol (Paul) Sproat, Clive (Cindy) Waugh, Debra (Tracy) Hoffos, Doreen (Al) Sawyer, and Lana (Andy) Nero, 25 cousins, and numerous great aunts and uncles. Predeceased by his grandparents Gerald Hill and Leslie and Audrey Waugh.
Through all the many scans, surgeries, biopsies, tests, needle pokes for bloodwork, IV chemotherapy, injections, PICC lines and butterflies, trips to Halifax for chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and literally thousands of pills, he never complained. Not once.
Oscar’s resilience, courage, optimism, grace, and determination were nothing short of remarkable. He was, just like his school basketball team and the origin of his name, a Warrior.
This picture sums up all of those qualities. When this picture was taken, his hair was falling out (for the second time), and he was fully aware of his prognosis. Yet his smile shows inner happiness, quiet confidence, and strength.
An inspiration to all who knew him, Oscar was an amazing, loving brother, a fierce friend, a joy of a son, and a kind-hearted, thoughtful, beautiful soul.
Thank you to all of you who prayed, sent us positive vibes and thoughts, dropped off food, taxied Harry and Grace to appointments or work, looked after our pets, sent thoughtful cards and gift baskets, and contributed monetarily. The support from everyone (including complete strangers!) has been truly amazing…we could not have gotten through this without you. Oscar felt truly thought of, cared for, and loved.
We’d also like to thank his oncology and radiation care team at the IWK, the QEH Peds Unit, Make a Wish Foundation, the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre, and the Palliative Care Centre. We could not have had better loving and attentive care.
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. from Trinity United Church. For those wishing to attend virtually, the service will be live-streamed on the church’s Facebook and YouTube pages. Visiting hours Thursday from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Oscar Waugh Friends Fund at the Community Foundation of PEI.
