With loving family present, Jean Burch, age 101 years died peacefully at the QEH on January 5, 2024. Jean is survived by her children: Carol (Len) Lang, Sandra (Rick) Hoenecke, Randy (Gay) Burch, Duncan (Sue) Burch; her grandchildren: Randi (Lee) Rosky, Cindy (Leigh) Read, Amy Hoenecke, Joey (Pat) Porter, Kyle Burch; her great grandchildren: Joe and Charly Rosky, Lewis, Sam, and Sadie Read. Jean was predeceased by husband Duncan Arol Burch, parents Abiona (née Waye) and Lloyd Anderson, and siblings Edith, Jack and Roy Anderson.
Born and reared in St. Peter's Bay, Jean's varied life brought her into contact with many people and places. After graduating from Prince of Wales College she began teaching in Bridgetown, moved to the Bank of Nova Scotia in Halifax, ran a Bed and Breakfast in St. Peter's Bay, and a move to Ottawa brought her to working at Frieman's Department Store and ultimately the Public Service Commission. After many years in Ottawa, enjoying friendships and activities both within her work and with The Chalmers United Church choir, Jean retired to PEI where she embraced her many interests.
She pursued a life filled with song: Trinity United Church choir, Oak Tree Singers, Legion Choir; volunteering: Red Cross, UNICEF, Meals on Wheels; executive positions: IODE, FSNA, her condo board; travel: throughout Canada, Europe, Australia, USA, UAE, Oman, Kenya, Hong Kong, and many cruises. These places, and more, were revisited as she travelled with friends or family, always ready to explore a new destination or shared experience. Her love of travel leaves us with concise and delightful documentation of 50 years of ‘trips’ as well as a unique collection of ‘sand’ from around the world.
Mom was a 'going concern' and she only began to slow down in her late 90s. She did daily crossword puzzles, Sudoku, her own yearly income tax returns, online banking, emailing, and kept up with politics on municipal, provincial, and federal levels. Reading was of paramount importance, and she read widely. Although the physical act of dancing was not to be, she loved watching Dancing with the Stars and kept a comprehensive grid to follow. In 2016 she wrote "Meandering Memories of My Life". For those of you who have received cards, letters and emails from her, you know she wrote as she talked - full of anecdotes and wry humour. Her love of song, laughter, ‘organization’, and family and friends carried her well throughout her 42 years of retirement.
We offer many thanks and appreciation for your heartfelt messages of condolence on her passing and extend an invitation to 'Meet and Share' your Jean stories with her family. Please join us in an informal gathering of remembrance in the Morrie Room of MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel (15 Ole King Square) on Thursday, July 11, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. If so desired, a donation in her memory may be made directly to the QEH Foundation or Trinity United Church. With deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Ben Franklin Stahl at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday, June 15, 2024. He was 91.
The award-winning artist immigrated to PEI in the early 90’s after Bantam Books asked him to illustrate the L.M. Montgomery’s novels beginning with her quintessential “Anne of Green Gables.”
He came to PEI to do research, fell in love with the place and bought a house in Belfast with his late wife, Pat Sorrells and continued to commute every month to NYC with his art. Ben is survived by his loving longtime partner Sally Cole, sons Keith (Mary) and Kees Stahl (Marion), daughter, Kathleen Stahl (Fred), sister Gail Stahl, sister-in-law Terry Sochet, grandsons Cody Stahl and Gary Grigg, his great-grandchildren, the extended Myers-Stahl family including David and Regina Stahl, dear friends Ann Sherman, Gail and Susana Rutherford, Gary Torlone, Norman MacDonald, Richard Vickerson and Vicki Armstrong.
Ben was predeceased by his wives Carolyn (Litchfield) Stahl and Pat Sorrells, his son Kurt (Kellen) Stahl, his mother, Margaret Eubank Stahl, and his father, Ben A. Stahl.
Born in Chicago in 1932, Ben moved to San Francisco in 1949 where he was soon drafted into the Army’s 21st Topographical Battalion at the Presidio in San Francisco. In 1955 he relocated his family to Connecticut, where for 17 years he taught figure drawing, portraiture, and composition at Famous Artist Schools in Westport, Connecticut, and later in Amsterdam, Netherlands where he led the school’s art department there. Upon his return to the United States, Ben provided for his family as a commercial artist living in Weston and eventually Litchfield, Connecticut where his first wife, Carolyn, died of cancer at the age of 44. It was as a commercial artist that Ben first ventured onto PEI, then chose to devote the past twenty years to the fine art painting of figures, landscapes, and abstracts which have been exhibited in East Hampton NY, Sarasota FL, Halifax NS and Charlottetown PEI.
No funeral service is planned. In Ben’s memory donations may be made to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation. His current work can be seen at Ellen’s Creek Gallery, Charlottetown, Avonlea Art Gallery in Cavendish and online with Gallery 18. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
