His death occurred at the QEH on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, one day after his 52nd Wedding Anniversary to the love of his life, Sherry (Jenkins). He loved his siblings dearly - Rhoda, Charlottetown, Valerie (Les MacEachern) Charlottetown, Dale (Dan Gallagher) Amherst, NS, Mark, Tracadie Cross, Kathryn (Bill Cheney) Utah, Faith (Francois Corbeil), St Lazare, Quebec. Brother-in-law to Linda Boswell (the late Albert), Nancy Heckbert (the late Ray), David Jenkins (Colleen), and Joanne Campbell (the late Michael). He was predeceased by his wonderful parents Allan and Margaret “Peggy” MacLeod and his in-laws Charles and Joyce Jenkins. He was also predeceased by his partner in crime Pat Corrigan.
John was a welder by trade, but he and his Dad started a sawmill on Day Ave in Sherwood. Heritage Mills became Heritage Mill Log Homes. As time moved forward, John became a mussel farmer and was well known for being an industry pioneer, travelling as far as Denmark to help establish the mussel industry. Locally he and his crew always made sure the crop was in the water before deer hunting season started early in October, so he could enjoy his hunting adventures in NS with his Ryan “family”, and in NB with his buddy, Doug Smith.
John loved being on the water, he had many different boats but was most proud of his “Cat Sass”. Tuna fishing became his passion. He loved every minute of it. The jokes, the laughter, the thrill of the catch. No bananas on board!
John and the word adventure go hand and hand. He had to go fast and fast he went. Whether it was on a motorcycle or a snowmobile or a boat - the faster the better. No motorcycle or snowmobile was not tinkered with in his garage. A snowmobile would emerge each winter tuned to perfection. He enjoyed many trips to Quebec with friends with Sherry hanging on the back.
John loved his family and had a wonderful relationship with his nieces and nephews and their children. John could always be counted on for wrestling matches and adventures. From the annual family boat ride to the adventures this summer at Kathryn’s in North Rustico where squeals of laughter could be heard.
It would be remiss not to mention the greatest parts of John and that was his incredible heart. His gift of compassion. His generosity. His amazing ability to be inventive. Most important was his utter love of his wife Sherry. Just wee teens when they met, they enjoyed so many things together. Travelling so many wonderful places. Sherry is not alone though, she has Cane the beagle who John described as “the best dog in the world”. That special dog brought John so much joy and will continue to keep Sherry company and on her toes. She also has Juanita -his partner in crimes wife and dear friend.
Juanita and Sherry are the new partners in crime and will continue that legacy you can be sure.
So deeply grateful for the care we have received from the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre since 2015, and our Dr. Jason Thompson. PEI Alzheimers Society became part of our life in 2022 when John was diagnosed with dementia. Thank you for your support.
John was admitted to the QEH on October 9th. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful hospital, with such caring angels. Extra special thanks to his care team in Unit 1.
Arrangements entrusted to MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral.
