The death occurred at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday, March 16, 2023 of Pauline Gayle Mills (nee Ramsay) of Charlottetown, age 79 years. Loving wife of the late David Mills. Errol Champion Monkley, 79, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, passed away on March 11, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, on July 28, 1943, he was the son of the late G. Lorne and Edna (nee Champion) Monkley and the grandson of the late Edward and Ella Mae (nee MacDonald) Monkley and Wesley and Memie (nee Thompson) Champion.

 

Errol is survived by his spouse, Evelyn (nee Kelly); daughter, Sandra Lee-Ann (Terry) Pauley, son Steven (Noella) Monkley; grandsons, Bradley and Jason (Rachel) Pauley and Carter Monkley; granddaughters, Lauryn Monkley and Hannah Pauley. Brothers-in-law, Philip (Carol) Kelly and Robert (Shirley) Kelly, sisters-in-law Betty (Robert) Brooks and Lilla Jenkins and several nieces and nephews.

 

Along with his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Edward (Claire) Monkley and Allen (Elizabeth) Monkley; parents-in-law William Cyrene “Cye” and Sara (nee McGee) Kelly; brother-in-law William “Bill” Kelly and sisters-in-laws Mary Lillian “Pat” Langfield, Dorothy “Dot” (Ralph) MacKenzie and Francis Elizabeth Kelly.

 

As a youth Errol, Edward and friends worked at his grandfather Champion’s fox farm on Central Street and for fun they would let the foxes out to try and catch them. As well, he participated in hockey, baseball, swimming and summer church camps.

 

In 1960, Errol followed his father and brother Edward’s footsteps and enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces. Errol was 17 years old at the time and required a note from his mother to join the Military, once it was provided he shipped off to join the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1964, while Errol was visiting PEI on leave. he met the love of his life, Evelyn. Two short years later they were married on September 24, 1966, in Edmonton, Alberta.

 

Errol re-mustered to the Royal Canadian Navy serving on the HMCS Chaudiere and retired as an Auditor with the Royal Canadian Air Force. During his 28-year military career serving Canada, Errol served in Edmonton, Alberta; Victoria, British Columbia; Iserlohn, Germany; Camp Borden, Trenton and Sioux Lookout, Ontario. Errol was fortunate enough to complete three around the world tours and his final posting was to Summerside, Prince Edward Island where he retired in 1988.

 

Following Errol’s military retirement, he worked as the PEI Conservative Party Executive Director; Special Advisor to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and later became an instructor for ProTrain driver training. His final retirement was in 1995.

 

As an adult he enjoyed: playing with his or his children’s dogs, growing flowers, photography, CB radios, darts, country music, golfing, attending community parades with his Shriners car, playing the ukulele, researching genealogy, watching his favorite show - “Blue Bloods”; watching the Montreal Canadians play hockey; and sitting in the sun reading a book. Errol loved to socialize, laugh, surprise his family with special gifts and great adventures. Family traditions and gatherings brought him great joy.

 

Since Errol was a child, he always had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. Errol decided after his numerous trips that New Zealand and Florida were his two favorites. Wherever Errol traveled he tried to absorb the community culture and people including: hunting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling. When at home, he loved to spend time at their cottage in MacIntyre Shore, Prince Edward Island.

 

Wherever Errol lived he got involved the community organizations including: the Trenton Winter carnivals; Trenton Radio club; Darts night in Sioux Lookout, the Fourth Prince PC Association (Vice President); the Summerside Lobster Carnival (President); Summerside Lions Club (President); The Royal Commonwealth Society (President); and Probus (President). Errol was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Charlottetown Gentlemen’s Club, and met frequently with a group of masonic friends for weekly morning coffee.

 

One of Errol’s greatest passions was being a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners. These organizations brought brotherhood, friendship, improved his sense of purpose, strengthened his spiritual outlook and broadened his horizons. Errol’s over 47-year membership in his beloved fraternity journey included:

 

• 1975 - he became a Mason at the Trent Lodge (No.38) in Frankfort, Ontario;

 

• 1981 – he became affiliated with St. John’s Lodge (No. 1) in Charlottetown, PEI;

 

• 1981 – he joined the Hiram and Lebanon Lodge (No.3) in Summerside, PEI;

 

• 1988 – he became the Worshipful Master in Summerside, PEI. He became a member of the Prince Edward Chapter (No.12) Royal Arch Masons in Kensington, PEI; and he became a Charter Member of the Red Oak Shrine Club in Kensington, PEI;

 

• 1996 – he joined the Philae Temple and the Island Shrine Club and served as President of the club;

 

• 1998 – he was elected the Grand Secretary of Grand Lodge of PEI;

 

• 2003 – he was elected the Deputy Grand Master and joined the Preceptory (No.35) of Knights Templar in Charlottetown and was appointed as Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Alberta and Grand Lodge of Delaware;

 

• 2004 – he was installed as the Grand Master of Grand Lodge of PEI;

 

• 2006 – joined the Order of Secret Monitor in Mt. Uniacke, Nova Scotia;

 

• 2007 – joined Red Cross of Constantine and invited to become a member of the Royal Select Masters in Charlottetown, PEI; and,

 

• 2008 and 2009 – he was elected the Presiding Preceptory.

 

Errol was a relatable and likeable person. He was a man of his word and a loyal person with a strong sense of right and wrong. Errol was a leader who exceled at organizing things, he deeply cared about those around him and his strong faith in God guided him.

 

Errol was a strict father but provided his children unconditional love, protection and made them feel special. He was supportive and proud of his children’s accomplishments. As a grandfather the strictness was no more. Errol attended and supported his grandchildren in all they did, ensuring to attend as many events as he could. If Errol was unable to attend an event, he would love to hear his grandchildren’s stories, tease and laugh with them.

 

With faith, family and friends Errol and Evelyn laid a firm foundation, and built a life together that stood the test of time. Their souls complete each other – their hearts beat as one. Errol will be remembered as a gentleman with great character. He carried himself with: honor, integrity, loyalty and conviction. He was a man of principles and any assignment he took on he embraced it with sincerity, devotion and commitment.

 

Errol’s family would like to extend a big thank you to Dr. Cooke (retired), the paramedics and the staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the wonderful care he received over the years.

It is with the deepest sadness the family of Florence Gertrude McNichol (nee Ferguson) announce her death in Ebenezer, PE, on March 8, 2023. Florence passed peacefully at home surrounded by family, having recently celebrated her 89th birthday.

 

Predeceased by her husband, George (1972), Florence leaves, heartbroken by her loss, daughter Shelly-Lyne (Clarence) Ellis; her pride and joy, grandson Samuel George; and beloved son William (Judy) Clair. Born the baby of 13 siblings, Florence was one of the two last surviving members of her birth family leaving behind her daring sister Odella “Babe” Mahar (the late Vincent).

 

Florence was born February 28, 1934, in Charlottetown to parents, Harry Garfield Ferguson of Marshfield (1963) and Agnes Karolyn MacAusland of Mill River (1993). Florence was predeceased by siblings, brother Gerald Garfield “Reg” killed in action March 13, 1944, buried in Italy; Elmer (Olive and Beryl); Hessell, died 1 month; twins, Olive Dixon (Keith) and Olga Brown (Gerald Burgoyne and Lloyd Brown); Roger (Jean); Gordon “Don” (Sadie); Joan, died age 6 years of diphtheria; and the dearest of sisters: Henrietta Clair (Tom); Thelma Misener (Clarence); and Hilda Szalay (Jeno).

 

Born into a large, loving family which resided on Park Street in Charlottetown, Florence cherished her memories of those times when the family was all together at home with mum and daddy. Christmases with Daddy handing out the presents, playing in the snow until she was wet to the bone, days spent swimming on the shore at the bottom of Park Street, and a homemade eggnog each night at bed time. She attended Model School, Prince Street School and then Mrs. Cochran’s Business School. As the baby, Florence would happily admit she was spoiled with attention. She enjoyed piano and voice lessons with Professor Kendall at Trinity United Church. She loved to sing. She loved to dance. From an early age, Florence enjoyed the movies and was a lifelong movie buff. Florence also took horseback riding lessons. As was in the case in the Ferguson home, Florence was an animal lover and enjoyed the sport of harness racing in particular. Throughout the years, the Gold Cup & Saucer remained the big race, watching via computer in recent years.

 

Florence had two cherished relationships in her life: Husband, Navy man, George McNichol (married October 27, 1954); a love affair which lasted until George’s passing in 1972. They met while she and he were boarding with Florence’s sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Clarence Misener, in Dartmouth, N.S. Once married, Navy postings took them to England and Scotland where Florence flourished and where her interest in the Monarchy began and continued life-long as a confessed Monarchist and Anglophile. Upon returning to Canada, Florence and George remained posted in N.S. until George’s forced retirement (rank of Chief Petty Office) due to health reasons, at which time they settled on PEI to be near family.

 

The second cherished relationship in Florence’s life, one rekindled, was with Ralph Green. Florence and Ralph were together for twenty-two years until his passing in 2000. They enjoyed much traveling during their years together: Florida, California, Arizona, various parts of Canada, and Italy. Always an excellent hostess making people feel welcome, Florence ran a B & B during the summer months welcoming tourists into their home from all over the world, many of them, repeat customers.

 

Throughout these years Florence was an active member of the Women’s Liberals of Charlottetown, always working hard for the party, especially during election time, and was Convener of the Teas which would be held each Opening of the House.

 

Florence was also a long-time member of Spring Park United Church acting as Elder in younger years. Unable to attend services due to Covid and failing health, she would watch the service via YouTube each Sunday. She was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and continued to love and sing hymns up until her final days.

 

Florence moved into her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Ebenezer in 2010. Having always lived in the city, Florence was concerned about moving out to the country but quickly fell in love with the quiet sense of community and wonderful neighbours she discovered there. Florence was a member of the Ebenezer WI.

 

Florence sorely felt the passing of each member of her family but was always thankful for the memories she had of her time with them. She lived to hear the news of her grandson, Samuel; her remaining sister, Babe; and all her nieces and nephews whom she loved so much (including David, Charlene, Farley, Gage and Bruce), each holding a special place in her heart, each connected to the memory of their respective parent, Florence’s brother or sister. Sister Thelma’s children, especially, Gordon, Karolyn, and Grant, were ever present in her thoughts having a long and loving shared history.

 

Florence was a gentle and generous soul, always full of love and forgiving. The world is a sadder place with her passing.

Elizabeth S. Reagh, K.C. was born on October 28, 1936, in Summerside, PEI, the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Ernest and Clara (Wilkinson) Strong. On the advice of her Summerside High School Latin teacher Elaine Harrison (now well-known in PEI for her cat paintings), but against the wishes of her father, Elizabeth applied for and won a scholarship from the University of King’s College, Halifax. After graduating from King’s, she entered Dalhousie University law school. At Dalhousie she met Theodore “Ted” Reagh, who had come from California, also to study law. In 1959, after Elizabeth’s parents did not approve of her choice, she went west by train to marry Ted.

 

Elizabeth and Ted started life together in Vancouver where she articled with the law firm that is now the Vancouver office of Norton Rose Fulbright LLP. Elizabeth was called to the British Columbia bar in 1960. Soon after, she and Ted moved to Salmon Arm, then a small town in the BC interior, which they knew of from some Vancouver friends who had prospected there. In the early Salmon Arm years, Elizabeth had a varied legal practice while Ted waited for his Canadian citizenship. Thereafter they practiced mostly real estate law together, first in Salmon Arm, where their children were born, and then in Charlottetown, PEI, where Elizabeth was one of the first women to be a practicing lawyer.

 

Once in PEI, Elizabeth became very involved in family mediation, beginning her work as a trained mediator in 1988. Some called her the “Mother of Mediation” in PEI for her pioneering efforts in the field. In response to her mother’s late-life dementia, Elizabeth became active in the PEI Alzheimer’s Society and supported the development of Elder Mediation on PEI. She was appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 1999. In 2010 she received a leadership award during the Third World Summit and Symposium on Elder Care in Chicago.

 

Elizabeth and Ted were active members of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Charlottetown, and singing in the choir became a full family affair. They were on the founding board, with Pat Rogers, of Pat and the Elephant, which still offers transportation to people in wheelchairs, and which Elizabeth herself was able to use in her later days.

 

Elizabeth did not love cooking, but she loved her children, her cats, and her garden. After Ted died in 2000, Elizabeth stayed on in her house (which was also her office) where she continued to practice law on her own. She practiced law and mediation until she was almost 80, and spent her final years living at The Mount Continuing Care Community.

 

Elizabeth had a long and full life. She remembered growing up during the Second World War, and her father had fought in WW I, so Elizabeth was adamant that Remembrance Day be an important and respectful time. She was a supporter of many charities and charitable associations. She chaired the PEI Review Board from 1988 to 2012, helping to make tough decisions about people who suffered from mental illness. She supported the arts. She loved Christmas, and would travel half way around the world to spend the day with her grandchildren.

 

Elizabeth died on March 6, 2023. She was predeceased by her beloved Ted, her brother Edward Strong, her sisters-in-law Gloria Butler Strong and Rhoda (Reagh) Myers, and her infant son Edward. Left to miss her are Elizabeth’s children: Charles (Heather Donald-Reagh), Jane (Lawrence Bruce-Robertson), Richard (Ellen Amin Reagh), and Maggie (Walter Brokx), and her grandchildren: Colin Reagh, Julia, Caroline and William Bruce-Robertson, and Louina Reagh Pålson. Her family are grateful to the many people who cared for Elizabeth in her later years, but especially to Joan Robinson, Susan Clancey, Marlene Jenkins, Sister Mary Deighan and the wonderful staff at The Mount Continuing Care Community.

 

Elizabeth loved flowers, and if St. Peter’s Cathedral were full of flowers when we celebrate her life on April 29, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., that would be a grand thing. After valiant efforts by Halifax surgeons, Ronald Robert Nicholson departed on Thursday, February 23, 2023, four months short of his ninetieth birthday. Outliving his wife Eleanor Janet Soper by eleven years. Ronnie bid farewell to many, foremost his three children Ronald Dana Skye (Vito Marangon), Pamela Joy and Andrew David (Shannon Piazza) whom all reside in the United States. Survived by sister-in-law Paula (Burden) Nicholson, nieces and nephews Karen, Jeff, Scott, Holly, Susan, Nora, Katherine and James and their families.

 

Son of Cora Norine Nicholson and John Ivan “Hickey” Nicholson of Charlottetown and Holland Cove.

 

The last shall be first and the first last (Matthew 19: 30). Predeceased by his infant sister Susan, brothers James “Jamie” Paton Nicholson – a Vietnam hero, Paul Beaumont (Belle Olive Wilkie) and John David.

Sidney Allison “Al” Allen passed peacefully at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at the age of 82. Al was born in Sable River, NS to the late Melvin and Margaret Allen. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Judy, his son Chris and daughter-in-law Lynn, his daughter Cheryl, grandchildren Jessica, Brianna (Michael), and Bobby, and great-grandson Jacob. Survived by his sister Marilyn MacKinnon of Liverpool, NS.

 

A wonderful man of many accomplishments and community service, having been a member of the Kinsmen Club for 57 years. He was part of the organizing committee that created and built the Sherwood Sportsplex in Charlottetown, an accomplishment he was very proud of. Al was an avid golfer and curler and loved to travel and camp. Al and Judy lived a wonderful life and made many happy memories together.

On Sunday, February 26, 2023, Maurice was lovingly reunited with his beloved wife of 70 years, the late Helen Elizabeth “Betty” Blake, at the age of 95. Maurice, or Poppy as he was fondly known, was also predeceased by his parents Edythe Hyndman and Vincent Blake, and by infant son, John Maurice.

 

Maurice will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his two daughters Helen (Douglas Gaudet), and Elizabeth (Peter Toombs), and his grandchildren Josh Toombs (Amanda Gallant), Emily Blake-Whitrow (Jeffrey Whitrow) and Jessica Toombs. He will also be fondly remembered by Mark Gaudet, and JD Gaudet (Lauren Sharpe) and great-grandchildren Raffi and Sonny.

 

Maurice was a quiet and humble man who was often sought out by friends and family for his sound advice. He also had a great sense of humour and loved to entertain all those who repeatedly stopped by Villa Avenue for a story or two. Throughout his life, Maurice volunteered and dedicated countless hours to various community organizations alongside his wife Betty. He was a member of the St. Peter’s Cathedral Vestry Committee and was also a long serving Senior Director of the W. H. Tidmarsh Foundation.

 

In his most recent years, Maurice could be found sharing his stories with the wonderful staff at the Mount Continuing Care Community; the care and support that they in return provided, has been a comfort to us all.
