Passed peacefully in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on January 21, 2023, B. Gail (Lavers) Brady of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She was born in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on August 19, 1942, the daughter of the late Theodore Horace “Buster” and Helen Mae (Howard) Lavers. Gail is survived by her sons Michael (Matti Polychronis) of Vancouver, BC, Jeffery (Jacqueline) of Edmonton, AB, and Gregory (Julianna Lin) of Baltimore, MD; granddaughter, Avery Brady; sister Leta (Sid) Carter; brother-in-law Allen (Carol) Crockett; niece Laurie (Ian) LeClair; nephews James Carter, Robert (Shannon) Crockett and Dustin (Robyn) Crockett and cousins Judy (Ken) Campbell and Rick Hipperson. She was predeceased by her husband Alan Albert Brady on December 13, 2022 and her sister Wilma Elaine (Lavers) Crockett in 2001.
Gail grew up in Charlottetown, attending Queen Charlotte High School and Prince of Wales College. She earned her R.N. from the Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing in 1963 where she made many lifelong friends. After working for a year at the PEI Hospital, she married and moved to Edmonton, AB. Gail worked at the Edmonton General Hospital for several years before resigning to focus on raising her sons. The family moved to Saskatoon, SK in 1978. She was actively involved in the education of her sons and in the community, with volunteer roles at her son’s schools, retirement homes, and in medical research at the University of Saskatchewan. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting and loved keeping her mind active with daily crossword puzzles. Gail was also a voracious reader with a deep interest and curiousity about the world around her.
In 2000, Gail and Alan retired and returned to PEI, purchasing a home in Stratford. In addition to renewing old friendships, Gail also made many new friends and was active in Trinity-Clifton United Church and the United Church Women, and the PEI Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She also enjoyed traveling with Alan to visit her sons out West and in the US. Most of all, Gail enjoyed spending time with her many friends, family, and nursing classmates, chatting happily with them for many hours. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

The first time the newspaper announced Hugh’s passing was when, as a mischievous boy, he was reported to have drowned while hopping bergs in Charlottetown Harbour. We regret that this second report is more accurate. “Hughie” died peacefully Dec. 20, 2022, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with family by his side as his favourite big band jazz played softly. He was 94.
Born June 14, 1928 in Charlottetown, he studied at Prince of Wales College, and served in Canadian Army Reserves after the war. He built a mini-empire of retail stores on P.E.I., including H.M. Simpson Ltd., the Card Shop, Wizard Business Machines and others.
He served as a city councillor in Charlottetown, and was co-owner of the Charlottetown Abbies hockey club. He was a lifelong fan of the Expos and the Habs, and was a champion skeet shooter who represented P.E.I. nationally. He was a pioneer of the cottage community of West Keppoch, and he was a champion recipient of gifts of excellent scotch.
Loving father of Ritchie, Andrea, Janet, Jamie (Marie Power), Timmy and Peter (Jenn Campbell). Grampy of 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Fern and Hugh; his wife and great love, Norma; sons John and David; siblings James and Nancy (Warren), and many wonderful friends.
We give grateful thanks to staff at the hospital, and at Andrews of Stratford.
