Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Ah ... But what is to be.
Audrey Florence DeBlois Volesky spent the first 13 years of her life and the last 3 years on Prince Edward Island. Born on June 3, 1927 to the late Noel Hamlyn DeBlois and Gerda Clairmont Taylor. Audrey had a wonderful childhood of stomping ice cakes, summers at the cottage playing tennis, golf and listening to Davis Cup on the radio. But at the age of thirteen the “wanderlust” that would be the beacon throughout her life took hold. In 1940 she left Prince Edward Island and went to Netherwood for four wonderful years of sports and academics. Then onto McGill for a degree in History where Audrey would readily admit that she learnt more at “Miss Harrison’s” (a women’s residence on Pine Str in Montreal) about life and the world.
In the early 1950’s Audrey travelled in her Austin Mini throughout post war Europe where her love of history grew and widened. She also developed her impeccable skiing style on the Hannehkahm in Kitzbuel with her good friend Jane Mackeen. Her two years working in London, England cemented her lifelong friendship with Dorothy Harley Eber “her wisest and dearest friend of 73 years” who died on August 16, 2022. Returning to Montreal she started her career in public relations working with Irene Kon – a great mentor and communist who introduced Audrey to her future husband – Jan Volesky a young textile engineer from the Czech Republic. In June, 1958 Audrey and Jan married in Montevideo, Uruguay and so commenced a 55 year adventure that encompassed three continents, seven countries, the birth of two children and numerous entrepreneurial and volunteer activities.
Audrey leaves her younger sister Norah Henry “the good Samaritan”; Patricia Samson “the organizer”; Pat Prowse “with the Madonna smile” and Anne Bradford “with the most beautiful golf swing” her son and his family Blake (Cheryl), two grandchildren Karena and Julian and her daughter, Jane as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families spread out around the globe. Audrey was predeceased by her husband Jan Volesky, her older brother Thomas (Mary) DeBlois, older sister Beryl Fraser, brother-in-law Dr. John Henry and nephew Tom DeBlois “young Tom” and her best friend Dorothy Harley Eber.
Those who knew Audrey well will remember her as a woman of honest and forthright opinions, decisive in times of urgency, supportive in times of need and above all else a woman who had an insatiable curiosity about the world around her.
A service of faith at St. Paul’s Anglican Church and a memorial celebration will be held in July 2023 when most of the family are home. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com

The complications were simply too great.
Paula Cecelia (MacDonald) Likely passed peacefully away at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, surrounded by her family.
Born on January 1, 1955, Paula was the eldest child of Phyllis (Hughes) and the late Frank MacDonald. Educated at the Parkdale School and Charlottetown Rural High School, Paula went on to earn a Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. Paula then moved to Toronto for several years where she worked before returning home to Charlottetown, where she found work in the office of a food wholesaler.
Out for a Friday night, Paula met a young broadcaster and the two soon fell in love. Paula and Frank Likely were married on July 28, 1984. Paula had married a broadcaster, but within a year, Paula and Frank had given up their careers as Frank followed a new call to ordained ministry. Life with a clergy member is often not easy, but Paula’s devotion and support for her husband was unwavering.
In 1992, Paula and Frank welcomed their only child Stephen, and from then on Paula’s focus in life was her son. When Stephen entered elementary school, Paula volunteered as the Librarian at Stephen’s school, a role she continued until Stephen progressed to high school. Literacy, especially among young people, was one of her passions. Any child’s gift from her always included at least one book, and she always had several books on hand from the library for herself.
Paula enjoyed travelling, and always looked forward to the family’s “almost annual” trip to Quebec City. Travel was education for Paula, and she always made sure to take Stephen to places and experiences which provided new learnings. Watching Stephen grow into the person he is today and celebrating all his accomplishments gave Paula the utmost pride and joy.
Her kindness extended well beyond her family. In addition to her work with Stephen’s schools, Paula was an enthusiastic supporter of many community groups and activities, including volunteering with the local Junior hockey team and canvassing for various charities.
Paula is survived by her husband Frank Likely, with whom she shared a birthday, their son Stephen (Lindsay Hodd), her mother Phyllis, siblings Mark (Joanne), Austin (Kathleen), Leah (Gary Kilbride), and Lorena (the late Rick Howard), her Likely brothers-in-law David (Carole), George (Jenny), Bob (Nettie), and John (Sandra), as well as many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces, and one great-grand-nephew.
A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel in Charlottetown, PEI, followed by the funeral liturgy. Committal will follow at the Sherwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to programs supporting children’s literacy, or as Paula would encourage you to do, buying a book for a child in your life. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
