It is with heavy hearts the family of H. Elizabeth “Betty” Blake announce her passing on November 10, 2022, at the age of 91 years. Grammy Betty, as she was fondly known, will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her beloved husband of 70 years, Maurice V. Blake, their two daughters Helen (Douglas Gaudet), and Elizabeth (Peter Toombs), and her grandchildren Josh Toombs (Amanda Gallant), Emily Blake-Whitrow (Jeffrey Whitrow), Jessica Toombs (Michael Zipp). She will also be fondly remembered by Mark Gaudet, and JD Gaudet (Lauren Sharpe and great-granddaughter Raffi) of Ontario. Betty was predeceased by her parents Reagh Horne and Helen MacLean of Brookfield PEI, her beloved brother, Pilot John “Bud” Horne, infant son, John Maurice Blake, and her sister, Margaret Horne.
Betty was born at home on August 27, 1931, on the Horne Cross Road in Winslow PEI. She often spoke about her adventures of growing up on the farm with her family; we all knew she was very much a farm girl at heart.
Betty was well known for her involvement with the church, her community, and in numerous volunteer activities such as being one of the first drivers for Pat Rogers and the Elephant. She helped start the Nancy Green Ski School at Brookvale Ski Park, was involved with the PEI MS Society, IODE, Red Cross Blood Donors, the Go-Getters Club at the Prince Edward Home, and the St. Peters Cathedral Lady’s Auxiliary (Binny Group) to name a few. For many years Betty and Maurice also made a great team delivering Meals on Wheels throughout Charlottetown. In recognition for Betty’s tremendous community and volunteer involvement she was awarded the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in 2000. However, her family and many others would dare say that Betty was best known as the “Witch of Villa Avenue” with her scary Halloween decorations and homemade fudge, that young and old enjoyed for generations.
We would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Mount Continuing Care Community; their care and support over the past few years has been a comfort to us all.
Resting at the MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Funeral Thursday from St. Peter’s Cathedral at 11:00 a.m. A private interment will be held in the Peoples Cemetery. Kindly, no visiting hours by family request. If so desired, memorial donations may be made directly to the PEI Humane Society, or any other charity of your choice. Messages of condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
As family have said, “You have grabbed the hand of many and helped them along the way, Life is better knowing Betty Blake”.
