Earl Beaton passed away at his home in Stratford, PEI, on Thursday April 8, 2021, at the age of 88. Earl was the oldest son of Lester and Janet (Richards) Beaton of Charlottetown, the husband of the late Edith Beaton, as well as the much-loved father of Deborah (Ian MacDonald) of Stratford, David (Michelle LaVie) of Charlottetown, and Susan (Fern Silva) of Alexandra. He will be missed by an adoring extended family including grandchildren Joel MacDonald (Heather Coughlin) and great-grandson William; Luke MacDonald (Sophia Stattmiller) and great-grandson James; Brett Beaton (Amanda Ramsay); Nathan Trainor (Brittany Boothroyd); Taryn Callaghan (Scott) and great-grandchildren Shay, Declan, Keira, and Ronan, and Megan Trainor (Ray Martell). Earl was the oldest of four brothers including: Keith (Marjorie) who pre-deceased him; Ralph (Aline); and Wayne (Brenda). Earl will also be greatly missed by his dear companion Phyllis MacDonald of Charlottetown. Earl was truly an inspirational family patriarch.
Earl was a well-known Island businessman, with his first venture into the working world being at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Charlottetown, followed by his advancement through various management positions with Eaton’s of Canada in Charlottetown, Moncton, and Halifax. He then took on an owner partnership in the H.L. Sear Insurance Company before retiring from that in the late 1970’s. His later endeavours involved the operation and advancement of many other local businesses, earning him the respect that was felt by the business community when he was named a Recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship by the Charlottetown Rotary Club. Earl’s community service was broad and was evidenced by his life-long service to Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown and his long service as a Board member at St. John House.
Earl’s family and friends have fond memories of summers spent in their travel trailer at Bagnall’s Campground in Stanhope where many stories were told, and friendships made. His many neighbours over the years will remember him as the person who was quick to smile, willing to lend a helping hand, and always on the move. He carried with him and lived by the words attributed to Abraham Lincoln: “People are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Funeral Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. from Zion Presbyterian Church, by invitation only or via live-stream on the church’s webpage. Interment in Cross Roads Cemetery. If so desired, memorials to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation or Zion Presbyterian Church would be appreciated. The death occurred peacefully at the Mount Continuing Care Community in Charlottetown on Friday, March 12, with her son, Wes, by her side. Born July 6, 1919 in Clermont PEI she was in her 102nd year.
Blanche was the devoted wife of John Frederick MacAleer (deceased) and is survived by her son Weston MacAleer (Connie), daughter Bethany (Ray deceased) Elliott, daughter-in-law Deborah Salter, (Noel deceased) and five grand-children Gillian King, Darren MacAleer (Lannia Pan), Thomas Elliott (Shannon), Jennifer Elliott Hubert (Scott), Jonathan Elliott and three great grandchildren Olivia King, Julia Pan MacAleer and Jaxon Hubert. Two children, Catherine in 1947 and Noel in 1979 predeceased her. Blanche is also mourned by nephew Fulton Hamill (Elizabeth), her niece Dorothy Johnston and several grand-nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.
Blanche was predeceased by her parents Archibald and Lavinia (nee Brennan) Campbell and six siblings: Irene Berryman (Ed), Douglas Campbell, Gladys Hamill (Russell), Chief P.O. Vernon Campbell, Major John Weston Campbell and Ethel Campbell.
Blanche’s life span had many experiences. She was born during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1919 and died during the current Covid-19 pandemic. She was truly an active member of the greatest generation who rose to the challenge of the Great Depression, the Second World War, the Cold War and an unprecedented rate of change to build PEI and the country.
Blanche and her husband John were pioneers in the development of the Village of Sherwood. John served 10 years as a member of the Village Council and upon its incorporation in 1963, was its first Chief Commissioner. MacAleer Drive being named in his honour. Blanche and John were major supporters in the construction of the Village Hall which still serves as a community meeting place. Blanche was an active member of the Women’s Institute and the C.W.L. They supported the early development of youth programs including the Home and School Association, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, minor hockey, and an outdoor rink near the current Cody Bank Arena.
For over three decades,1950’s to the 1970’s, Blanche was well known for her employment in the food service business at the Peter Pan and from her own cafeteria, Mrs Mac’s, at the Ellis Brothers Shopping Centre. Satisfying her desire to be a nurse, in 1977 she became a resident care worker at Livingston McArthur Nursing Home, now called the Atlantic Baptist Nursing Home.
In 1983, her husband suffered a debilitating stroke. For the next eight years, until his death, she put her skills to use providing personal care for him at their new home in Bellevue Cove, Stratford. In Stratford, Blanche was a member of the LOVE program where she read and was read to by many students of the Glen Stewart Elementary School. She is fondly remembered for her stash of candies brought to encourage and reward student efforts. Blanche sang in the choir of the Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
As a wife and a sister of veterans, Blanche honoured them with a wall of pictures in her home. Each year, until she was 100 years old, she recognized their service with the laying of a wreath at the Kensington Memorial every November 11th.
Each year, for 40 years, she took great pride and solace in the presentation, on the University campus, of the Noel MacAleer Award, granted to an UPEI engineering student who expressed the leadership qualities of her son Noel who tragically died of cancer while attending the Faculty of Engineering. The award had been created by Noel’s classmates.
Blanche worked very hard all her life. She will be remembered for her tireless energy, indomitable spirit and devotion to family and the community. She will be long remembered and missed.
Her family extends a special thanks to the staff at THE MOUNT, and in particular, those on the St Dunstan’s floor who provided concern and care for Blanche over the past three years.
Due to restrictions no visitation or public funeral will take place. A private service, by invitation only, will be held on Thursday, March 18, at 10:30 a.m. at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. The ceremony will be live-streamed for those wishing to attend virtually, at https://event.forgetmenotceremonies.com/ceremony?c=3fba8dd1-8daf-4723-993b-809ab92ad8d3. Interment later in the Roman Catholic Cemetery.
