Brenton passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. The family is so grateful that he was able to enjoy this past summer visiting with close friends and family (including his cherished granddaughters), traveling to the family cottage, and celebrating his 87th birthday on August 27th.
Brent was predeceased by Marion, his beloved wife of 48 years, and is survived by his loving daughters, Anne (Ewan Clark) and Elaine (Bill Tebbutt) and his grandchildren Samantha and Chloe Tebbutt and Emma, Lauren and Luke Clark. Brent was the middle child of the late Harold and Adelaide Partridge (Sampel). He was born and raised in Charlottetown, leaving school at a young age to work and help support his family. Brent was their “rock” and was always there for them. He was a third generation railway man and like his father and grandfather, he went to work for Canadian National Railway in 1951. He dedicated his service there for 36 years in various roles until his retirement in 1987. As a younger man, Brent enjoyed swimming, bowling, playing golf, curling and was active in his community, church family (Elder and choir member) and as a Cub/Scout leader. He was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church and also enjoyed worship at Brookfield and Nine Mile Creek Presbyterian churches.
Brent and Marion built their family cottage in 1965 on the Island’s beautiful south shore in Cumberland; it was their favourite place to spend time. They welcomed and hosted friends, family and strangers with open arms and a full fridge for many years. Brent and Marion made countless trips to visit Anne (Halifax) and Elaine (Toronto) and his daughters are grateful for the memories and the laughs. He and Marion spent many winter weeks in sunny Florida enjoying hours on the beach as well as connecting with Island family and friends there.
Brent powered through many years of chronic pain and surgical interventions and, despite it all, always found optimistic and supportive words for those around him. He took to heart that the Lord loves a cheerful giver, and was always generous of spirit and support for those he loved and those whom he felt had a need. To the very end, Brent was full of conversation and stories and was quick to poke fun and share a laugh. He loved to engage with people, spend time playing cards (45s in particular), and enjoy a coffee at a local shop. He was also an avid fan of tennis, golf and curling, and he attended the National Brier in Newfoundland after his heart surgery in 2017.
Family came first for Brent, and he loved and cherished spending time with loved ones, to whom he devoted his entire life. Anne moved back to PEI in 2018, and she and Ewan were able to share their lives with him. Anne, Elaine, and their families, are eternally grateful for their father’s unconditional love and for all he did for them throughout his life.
Anne and Elaine would also like to express their sincere thanks to friends and family for all of their love and support to their Dad; particularly, since the loss of Marion in January 2013. Much gratitude is owed to Carl Holmes and Nancy Clow for their friendship, care, and support. Brent lived at Burnside Community Care in Clyde River during his final years and considered it “home”. He enjoyed the company of residents/friends and appreciated the care and support of the wonderful staff. The family also want to acknowledge the incredible and compassionate medical care provided to him in his final days by Dr. Aimee MacKenzie and the QEH nursing staff of Units 3 and 8.
A celebration of life will be held from Zion Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 24, with interment to follow at Brookfield Cemetery. Following current restrictions, guests are required to pre-register if they plan to attend by calling the church office at (902) 566-5363. If so desired, memorials may be made to Brookfield Presbyterian Church Cemetery or the Zion Presbyterian Church Choir fund. In accordance with Brent’s wishes, his remains have been cremated and there will be no visitation. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
