The morning is cold and brisk, but bright sunshine cuts the chill. It will mean bundling up in her puffy, bright orange winter coat so as to meet with her walking group, or take her little dog for a walk of his own. Afterwards, a homemade soup may be in order, inspired by vegetables carefully preserved from this summer’s bountiful garden, or perhaps featuring fresh basil from the plant overwintering in the garage. Sadly, these will longer be a part of Prairie’s day; as of the early afternoon on January 31, she rests. Never one to be short of words, whether in conversation or written word, we can only expect her obituary to follow in kind.
Born October 16, 1947 to William and Pauline (Koshelanyk) Vance, she was the youngest of her siblings. She is survived by Constance (Earl) Orth, George (Elaine) Vance, and Gordon Vance. With her first husband Greg (Sharron) Wilson, she had three amazing children, Tyler, Jonathan, and Ashley Wilson (Ryan Gilmour). She was an extraordinarily proud grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren, Veronica Wilson, Chloe, Knox, and Davis Gilmour. While living in Penetanguishene, ON, Prairie met and married her loving husband Paul Fontaine. Following a brief move to Woodstock, ON, together they found their forever home in Canoe Cove, PEI.
Prairie will be remembered sporting a broad brimmed hat and with pruning shears in hand, weaving through her gardens, sharing stories for every tree, shrub, flower, and feature. Their origins, history, and future plans for each of them - what would be rebuilt, moved, divided, pulled up, or cut back. A breeze off the Strait will ripple her white, long sleeve shirt, worn as part of her daily regimen against the sun's rays. Inside, is a collection of books to be read with varying degrees of interest, whether for personal enjoyment or to be discussed with her book club. Never one to be ashamed, Prairie will readily share that she skipped to the last chapter to see if it will be worth reading all of the proceeding pages. Her writings fill journals, pieces for her writing group, traditional mail correspondence, and an extensive blog (www.prairiewakerobin.com). Challenging crosswords or Netflix series wrap up a day filled with projects, gardening, delightful cooking, and her most favourite, cherished conversations with dear friends and family. Prairie was sure to keep everyone up to date, even if it meant oversharing, in her passion to bring everyone together and spread her love.
To remember Prairie, details for summer celebrations, both in Ontario and PEI, will follow. Please do not send flowers, Prairie would very much rather see them stay in the ground to be enjoyed by everyone. She recently made a donation to Island Nature Trust, an organization dedicated to the protection of natural areas on PEI, and would be delighted to have anyone wish to do the same in her honour.
Prairie will be missed fiercely, as a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, neighbour, and club member, but also in her words, a teacher, dream counselor, art creator, reader, diarist, dreamer, gardener, walker, yoga practitioner, soul-miner. But even greater will she be missed as a dear friend, with her open heart and unlimited love for all. Each of us is incredibly fortunate to have had her a part of our lives, and never will she be forgotten. Remember her in the warmth of the sun on your face (while wearing sunscreen), within the beauty of a garden, and when giving the biggest and best hugs you can (never miss the chance for a hug).
Mom, may your spirit follow your dreams. We love you and will forever miss you.
Tyler, Jonathan, and Ashley.

The death of Barbara Anna Belle Johnston (née Partridge), in her 90th year, occurred peacefully on January 28, 2022, at Andrew's of Stratford, her home for the last four years.
Anna was a proud graduate of the PEI Hospital School of Nursing and enjoyed the lasting friendships of her classmates and their annual reunions. While her husband Jack enjoyed his many years as an active member of the Kinsmen Club, Anna too enjoyed her regular get togethers with the Kinettes for many decades. Both Anna and Jack enjoyed their summers at the family cottage in Stanhope with their summer cottage friends, and winter holidays together, in the warmth of the Florida sun.
Anna and her late husband Jack W. Johnston were the proud parents of Lynn, Bruce (Lori), Karen (Scott) Bruyea, and Brian (Lisa) and subsequently the proud grandparents of Taylor, Braden, Cory, Candice, Brittany, Emma, and Adam. Anna was also great-grandmother to seven wonderful great-grandchildren.
Anna will be sadly missed by Jack's siblings: Esther (the late Guy) Stewart, Allan (Val MacLean, and the late Barbara), and Barbara (James) Macnutt and will be remembered fondly by her many nieces and nephews here in PEI and also in NS, Western Canada, and the USA.
Anna was predeceased by her parents Harold and Adelaide (Sampel) Partridge and her siblings: Roger, Gail, Joyce, and Brenton, as well as by her mother-in-law Jessie Johnston.
Anna's family extends a sincere thank you to the wonderful staff at Andrew's of Stratford for their warmth, professionalism, kindness, humour, and the excellent care she received.
A special thanks to caregivers Mavis Paynter and Sheila Stapleton who provided friendship and care to Anna while she lived at home.
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. A graveside service will be held at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date. If so desired, memorial donations to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com

Departed peacefully at Andrews of Stratford on January 16th 2022 when he left us to join his beloved wife Anne in Heaven.
Gerald B. Ells of Charlottetown, PEI aged 96 years. Devoted husband of Dorothy Anne Ells (nee Dunsford); loving father of Judy Ells-Whittingham (David) and Randy (Kathy) Ells; Grandfather to Gareth (Gloria) Whittingham; Uncle Gerald to Douglas, Robert and Tom Sear, and Susan (Ells) Leger. Predeceased in November 2021 by his wife of 66 years, Anne Ells; his parents Herbert and Vera (Mosher) Ells; brother Vernon Ells and wife Marjorie.
Gerald was born in Canning, Nova Scotia on February 25th 1925. A descendant of the original ‘Planters’ who settled in the Annapolis Valley in 1760’s. Gerald would accompany his Dad on rambles, exploring the Valley and Blomidon shore. The family was embedded into the Canning community and both Gerald and Vernon grew up with family, strong faith, music, local industry and love of the land.
Gerald finished High School in 1942 and completed his electrical apprenticeship in the next 2 years. While working his trade and volunteering with the Fire Department he found time to set up a small photography studio in Canning. Now he could take photos of the Valley he loved. He was noted for his scenes of the valley and for hand-colouring many of these photos in oils.
Anne and Gerald met at a skating party in 1949 and as their relationship grew Gerald found himself following Anne and her family to Ottawa where he began work with Crawley Films, then a leading company in Canadian film.
Gerald and Anne were married in Ottawa in 1955, where they brought Judy and Randy into the world. They had many family adventures and created a beautiful home and garden in Bells Corners. Once there, Gerald would work for Computing Devices of Canada where he was an industrial photographer. He photographed many leading-edge designs and technology.
In 1971, the family moved to PEI where Gerald started the photography program at Holland College. A natural teacher, Gerald loved the Holland College philosophy of self-motivation and life-long learning. It was a perfect fit. There were many students over the years and Gerald was always very proud of all their accomplishments. His photo here, taken by former student Susan MacDonald.
In 1990 Gerald retired from Holland College. He and Anne spent time with family and fixing-up two charming homes. He developed lovely gardens for Anne at both homes so she would always have flowers and beauty. He was her constant companion and guardian.
Their last ten years have been at Andrews of Stratford where Gerald and Anne were close to Anne’s sister, Betty (Sear) Drysdale. They would take part in music and social events. Gerald began painting, container gardening and writing. In their nineties, Gerald would most often be at Anne’s side or reading and writing his memoirs for the family.
Gerald took beautiful textural photos which celebrated landscapes, seascapes, the built environment and people; inviting us to look closer and to celebrate the beauty in everyday scenes. Through his work, he continues to inspire us to care for our beautiful world as he did.
The family would like to thank all the staff and caregivers at Andrews of Stratford, Rev. Madonna Fradsham, Rev. Arnold Stairs and Dot Blanchard for all their love, care and attention for both our Mother and Father.
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment in Toronto, Ontario. If so desired, memorials to Doctors Without Borders or Island Nature Trust would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
