Survived by son-in-law Maurice “Moe” Rodgerson, siblings Helen McCormick, Ivy Colton, and William “Bill” Sherren. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. With love and song at Andrews of Stratford, surrounded by her family, on Monday November 1, 2021 Dorothy Anne Ells (nee Dunsford) of Charlottetown, PEI aged 93 years. Beloved wife of Gerald B. Ells, loving mother of Judy Ells (David Whittingham) and Randy (Kathy) Ells. Grandmother to Gareth (Gloria) Whittingham. Auntie Anne to Douglas, Robert and Tom Sear, and Susan (Ells) Leger. Predeceased by her parents Sydney J. and Dorothy A. (Andrews) Dunsford; and adored sister Betty (Dunsford) (Sear) Drysdale.

 

Anne was born in Campbelton, NB on November 24, 1927. Due to her father’s banking career the family soon moved to Montreal, QC where she and sister Betty spent their young lives with extended family and city living.

 

In 1941 the family was transferred to Victoria, PEI to the ‘Bank House’. Anne often recounted that there was lots of snow, lots of red mud and lots of fun with friends.

 

Anne attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and then Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB. That little Bank of Nova Scotia in Victoria-by-the-Sea is where Anne began her career alongside her Bank Manager father.

 

Yet another bank transfer in 1948 would take her with her family to Canning, Nova Scotia where a whole new adventure would unfold. On a Winter skating outing she met Gerald. Both were great skaters. Their relationship would blossom over the next five years. Always sparkling, Anne was Canning’s Apple Blossom Princess in 1948. Singing was one of Anne’s special gifts. Years of singing in church and community choirs developed her lovely high clear voice which accented many services and events.

 

Anne loved music and she loved Gerald. When her father retired and her family moved again to Ottawa, Gerald followed, pursuing Anne and a career in photography. They were married in 1955 in Ottawa where they brought Judy and Randy in to the world. Ottawa was home for 16 years where they had many friends and family adventures. Summers were highlighted with vacations to PEI where sun, beaches, sister Betty and three lively nephews were their special hosts.

 

As Gerald’s career developed the family moved to Bunbury, Prince Edward Island and Gerald began the Photography Program at Holland College in 1971. Anne soon returned to the Bank of Montreal to continue her career. She was often called “Annie” and much-loved by the staff and her many customers.

 

Anne and Gerald eventually retired to Charlottetown where they fixed-up two lovely homes. Anne always had lots of flowers from Gerald’s beautiful gardens.

 

The last ten years of Anne’s life has been at Andrews of Stratford where her love of music and singing really shone. She loved the staff, the social events, being close to sister Betty, and of course being with Gerald.

 

Anne’s life was not without its struggles. She faced many challenges with both her mental and physical health. She had amazing energy and faith. With her love of music, family and Gerald at her side she always sparkled.

 

“Rings on her fingers, bells on her toes, she shall have music wherever she goes”.

 

The family would like to thank Dr. Spears and all the staff and caregivers at Andrews of Stratford for all their love, care, and attention.

Susan Mary Gallant of Charlottetown passed away peacefully on October 13, 2021 after a short illness. She was in her 59th year. Survived by sister Audrey Deveaux, brother Brian “Rover” (Valerie) and a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by parents George and Ida Gallant of Rustico, brothers Arliss, Barry “Punkin”, David “Becker” and Ronald (Jade).

 

For the past few years Susan has resided at Smith Lodge and Bevan Lodge. The family would like to express their sincere thanks for the care provided to Susan during this time.

 

If you were ever on the receiving end of her sarcastic sense of humour, you knew how much you were loved. We will all miss her.

Our mother died on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the age of 97 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Beryl was born on October 15 1923, the second of four children born to the late Noel Hamlyn DeBlois and Gerda Clairmont Taylor. Born and raised on Water Street in Charlottetown, Beryl attended West Kent Elementary School and then spent three happy years at Netherwood School for Girls in Rothesay, New Brunswick. Following graduation in 1940 she enrolled at Prince of Wales College back on the Island. Beryl played an excellent tennis game and was a regular in the Eastern Canadian tennis tournaments. Mum excelled at badminton and horseback riding, too; as sister Audrey commented while admiring a photo of her astride a horse at Netherwood, “Beryl sits a horse well!” She interrupted her studies to join the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (the “Wrens”) in 1943 and was stationed in Greenock, Scotland, during the last two years of World War II. Demobilized in 1946, Beryl attended McGill University in Montreal, played on the McGill Varsity tennis team, and graduated with a degree in Commerce in 1949.

 

Beryl married F. Clarke Fraser in December 1948, and had four children with him: Norah, Noel (Pat), Alan, and Scott (Tasha). She was proud grandmother to their seven children: Trevor (Marcelle), Emmett (Justine), Gillian, Masha, Alexander, and Ogden; and four great-grandchildren: Eliot, Cohen, Finnegan, and Kipling. Survived by sisters Audrey Volesky and Norah Henry. She was predeceased by brother Thomas D. DeBlois (Mary), daughter-in-law Jelena, granddaughter Megan, and brothers-in-law Jan Volesky and Dr. John Henry.

 

After their divorce in 1973, Beryl returned to her alma mater this time as an administrative coordinator in McGill’s Dentistry School where she worked until retiring in 1989. She was a regular at the Shawbridge Ski Club and the Montreal West Tennis Club, and served many years on the executive of the Montreal Field Naturalists Club. Beryl was an excellent seamstress, sewing many of her and her children’s clothes, and knitted sweaters and mittens for all the kids. She served on the Women’s Auxiliary of the Montreal Children’s Hospital (and held the Treasurer’s position for some years), the WA of St. Thomas’ Anglican Church in Montreal, and was a Brown Owl (the adult leader) for the Montreal West Brownies. An avid reader, birder and cross-country skier, Beryl also excelled at bridge and mah-jong. She came home to the Island for good in 2001 and eventually moved to Andrews of Stratford (2008 – 2016) and then to Whisperwood Villa Nursing Home.

 

Beryl was a true Islander and came home for summers at Keppoch just about every year she lived on the mainland. She brought her children and grandchildren and their families to Keppoch too, and they still feel connected to the Island and are part of the Keppoch community. The cottage at Cherry Corner was that “home away from home” she especially enjoyed in her later years when hosting family and friends from away.

 

The family is deeply grateful to the staff at Whisperwood Villa, where Beryl received excellent, loving care throughout her stay but especially over the past 19 months of the pandemic.
