With great sorrow the family of Donald R. Livingstone C.M. announce his passing on Wednesday, September 28th, 2022 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PEI. Beloved husband to Sheryl, father of David (Cathy), Steven (Kathy), and Scott (Joyce). Grampy to Colin (Megan), Steven (Samantha), Matthew (Jenine), Robert (Kathleen), Carter (Sydney), Charlotte (James), Kaitlin, and Joshua (Meade). Great Grampie to Russell, Louisa, Arthur, Romy, Alana, Emily, Mayme and Athena.
Don was born in Charlottetown, May 31st, 1934, to Wilfred and Olive Livingstone and lived his 88 years on the Island where his sense of duty extended far beyond that of his family. The responsibility he felt to both his community and country is clearly demonstrated by his lifelong service to a wide array of organizations whose mandate it was to improve the lives of all citizens but especially those in need. By providing support and offering a path through which people could learn the skills to empower themselves, the effects of his contributions will extend well beyond his long life. In an effort to respect the modest man he is, we will try to give a brief summary of his efforts over the years.
His longest standing commitment was to Scouts Canada, starting that journey in 1942 taking him all the way to February of 2022 which ended only due to declining health. During his time with the Scouts, he worked to help innumerable youth acquire the skills to better not only their own lives but those within their communities and country as well. Several notable accomplishments within Scouts Canada included starting new cub and scout packs when the community of Bunbury was first founded, integral roles in at least 9 Canadian and World Jamborees, receiving the King’s Scout Badge from Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth in Charlottetown in 1951, the Medal of Merit, the Silver Acorn, Scouting’s highest honour the Silver Wolf, and both the Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. During his time with Scouts Canada, he occupied many roles some of which included being a Cub and Scout Master, Trainer, Provincial Commissioner through to Council President.
Don’s working career of 43 years was with the Island Telephone Co. Ltd. He loved the company and its people and retired as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Don’s volunteering commitments extended well beyond Scouts Canada, including the roles of Chairman of the Board of Governors of Holland College, Past President of the United Way of PEI, Director and Treasurer of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, Director of The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada, Director of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown, Director President of Telephone Pioneers and many more. His involvement in community service didn’t end there, he was also member of such organizations as Charlottetown and Summerside Chamber of Commerce, the Island Telephone Co. Ltd. (Director), Island Nature Trust, PEI Museum & Heritage Foundation, Friends of Confederation Centre, Junior Achievement of Canada (Director), Bunbury Community Improvement Committee (Chairman), Bunbury School Board (Chairman), Local Initiatives Program Committee of Bunbury (Chairman), Southport Planning Board, Town Planning Advisory Board of Charlottetown, Protestant Children’s Home (Chairman), Charlottetown Y.M.C.A (Director), Atlantic Ventures Trust (Director) and Trinity United Church as an Elder.
In 1991 Don was appointed a Member of “The Order of Canada”. His family are forever grateful and awed by all he has done for them and others. We will strive to follow in his footsteps. It is safe to say that throughout all this, Donald has more than accomplished the goal of leaving the world a better place than he found it. The loss, not only to his family but, to his fellow citizens is immense and leaves a large void to be filled, we welcome the challenge and implore you to do the same. No act of kindness or service is too big nor too small, helping others helps us all. Rest easy Don/Dad/Grampie, you more than earned it, God Bless to all.
A service of thankfulness and remembrance for his life will be held at Trinity United Church, Charlottetown, where he was baptised and a lifetime member, on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 2:30 pm. Arrangements are entrusted to MacLean Funeral Home, Charlottetown, PEI. Online condolences may be made at www.macleanfh.com
